This mesmerizing kinetic art installation makes viewers 'uncomfortable'

Scoot over! Straw man from The Wizard of Oz, there are 18 now. This art installation at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, Korea by renowned artist Cloe-U-Ram features a mesmerizing kinetic sculpture of 18 straw men carrying a 'Round Table' on their back with a rolling straw head atop the board.

As the men appear to get up, the head rolls further away, in a process that seems to go on forever in no detectable rhythm. The installation appears to make the viewer wish to glance at the faces of the straw men, only to be denied a glance as the next group of them attempt to stand up. It was carried out as part of the MMCA Hyundai Motor Series 2022.

“It’s a game of no-win situation – where no one can assert their claims on the single head" said Choe U-Ram who has been showcasing several intriguing pieces about human existence since the early 90s. While there are three large black bird sculptures hanging above the round table, most have interpreted it as the rich or upper class looking down on the poor.
