UNESCO biosphere extends status for another decade

The UNESCO Biosphere reserve at Baa Atoll recently announced that the United Nations organization has renewed the Biosphere Status for the atoll for the upcoming decade.
According to the Baa Atoll secretariat, the periodic review forms had been submitted as per the recommendation of 28th International Advisory Committee for Biosphere Reserves held from 28 February to 4 March 2022. As such, the 34th session of the International Co-ordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere (MAB ICC) Programme in Paris , France has deemed that the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve is able to fulfill the criteria allocated within the Statutory Framework of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
The Baa Atoll team said in a Facebook post, "We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved during the review process, despite the challenges that were faced due to with COVID 19 and travel restrictions. This was truly a team effort which has secured the title for Baa Atoll as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve for the next 10 years".
UNESCO adds new biosphere reserves every year in addition to renewing existing
statuses. This year, the organization granted the designation of "biosphere reserve" to 11 different biomes spanning across 9 countries. This brings the total biosphere reserves on Earth to 738 sites in 134 countries
