This town of Alaska elected a cat as their Mayor

There are several times in the political sphere where voters didn't feel very strongly about any of the candidates. It was just such a time back in 1997 in the small Alaskan town of Talkeetna. Residents did not like any of the candidates for mayor on the ballot and so a write-in for Stubbs, the cat won him the Mayorship.

Stubbs was a stubbed tailed Manx mix calling local Nagley’s Store home. His closest constituent, is perhaps his owner Kjetil Spone. While most politicians may find it hard to carve out time for their constituents, Stubbs's 15 year tenure as Mayor was always met with him being out and about among his constituents. Spone said that Stbbs, "Interact with the people of town and the visitors that come here was, you know, that was his main duty and he did it well". It was in 2015 however that Stubbs had to retreat from the public eye due to deteriorating health and old age, and later died at age of 20 in 2017.
Spone put it best when he said, "He was a trouper until the very last day of his life,.. You are a remarkable cat and we will dearly miss you."
