What intrigues us about 'The Con'? - A look at Inventing Anna and The Tinder Swindler

It was February of 2022 and the entertainment world was suddenly filled with the hustle and bustle of the Art of a Con. Netflix cues were sure to be filled with Scandal and Grey's Anatomy veteran Shonda Rhimes's take on Anna Delvey who defrauded Manhattan's elite in Inventing Anna as well as that of the Tinder Swindler- Shimon Hayut of Israel who swindled money off of women he found on the popular dating app.

The online streaming service also reprised a fan-favorite from 2019 in Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened which had led several of the mega-rich and celebrities to end up stranded on an island in the Bahamas for a music event that never took place. In March 2022, Hulu also released 'The Dropout' featuring Amanda Seyfreid as Elizabeth Holmes of Theranos who took Silicon Valley on a wild goose chase for a fake technology that didn't exist.
All of these reprisals - be it documentary style or dramatized with more attractive plotlines and actors for television, have held the interest of the vast majority of viewers. Inventing Anna remained number 1 on many a region's viewing lists with the actual Anna Delvey's instagram garnering 650,000 followers since the series premiered. The Tinder Swindler hit the top 10 on Netflix in 92 countries within about a week. So what is it about watching the art of the Con- as well as its impending consequences that are so satisfying to the average viewer?Even as we say the words "I would never fall for that" aloud, the vagueness in security and intimacy handed over in the use of social media platforms bring us within close proximity to being a victim of fraud. Surprisingly, it is the younger generation that are most 'at risk' with the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reporting a loss of USD 5.8 billion to Americans where majority age group was between 20 and 29. Mind you this amount is also a 70 percent increase when compared to the finances lost in 2020 to scams. Or perhaps it is the opportunity to finally see the other hand in the deck- to know the ins and outs of magic tricks. Afterall, in a world filled with uncertainties and inconsistencies what is better than seeing a magic trick? the threat of seeing how it all took place in the first place.
However fascinating the series are, what is found to be even more fascinating is the viewers and how they are glued to the series. Viewing platforms apparently have plans to cash in on this intrigue, with Apple Plus set to release their own rendition of the Elizabeth Holmes scandal -just as Netflix wis poised to release “Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitives'' and “Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King” in more of the 'swindler' sensation.
