Maldives imposes travel restrictions due to Omicron as nations accused of being "selective"

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that the new Covid-19 variant from South Africa is concerning. This move has led several nations to close its borders to African nations, despite the variant having spread among European and Asian nations.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that the new Covid-19 variant from South Africa is concerning. This move has led several nations to close its borders to African nations, despite the variant having spread among European and Asian nations. 
The discovery of the variant has left several nations still shell shocked from the effects of the last variant to close borders and take severe measures. Maldives has effectively closed off it borders to travelers from South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique,Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Eswatini. Several nations around the world have also restricted travel from other African nations of Angola, Malawi and Zambia. 
The African Union spoke to the BBC where the Co-Chair of the Union's vaccine delivery allowance, Ayoade Alakija noted, "These travel bans are based in politics, and not in science. It is wrong... Why are we locking away Africa when this virus is already on three continents?".
The new variant has currently spread to several areas in Europe with confirmed cases of two in the UK, two in Germany, one in Belgium and another one in Italy. While Israel has also confirmed the new variant, travelers have been banned from entering the settlement's territories for the next 14 days.
