Civil court case against Gulhifalhu port development

Activist Humaidha Abdul Gafoor has filed a case in Civil Court against the land expansion and reclamation efforts for the  construction of Gulhifalhu port. The petition noted that the dredging process at the island of Gulhifalhu carries some serious environmental, economic and cultural costs.

The defense in this case include, the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, the Ministry of Environment and the Environment Protection Agency.
The Plaintiff has noted that the Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) carried out in April 2020 also showed the severe impacts of reclamation on the area. This would most likely include irreversible damage to the 100 meter long Hans Hass Place (Also known as Kiki Reef) which is a protected marine area in the middle of Gulhifalhu.
Humaida has expressed her belief that the government's negligence in the face of priceless natural beauty and environmental systems being exchanged for riches cannot be tolerated. That too, with the warnings of environmental assessments ringing in our ears.
The Gulhifalhu port construction is said to cost approximately MVR 8.9 million. The current administration has veered off the initial plans to largely use Gulhifalhu for housing, and focused on industrial development in terms of a port.
