What no one is talking about-Protests outside the MET Gala
18 Sep 2021
Just a few steps from the exorbitantly extravagant curio-invoking costumes on the slew of celebrities at the MET Gala, Black Lives Matter protesters were facing arrests. Ironically, Police surrounded the demonstrators chanting "If we don't get no justice, then they don't get no peace".
Video footage shows protestors breaking through barricades set up outside 5th Avenue, Manhattan, after which Police tackled and arrested about 9 protestors. The Daily Mail got a hold of flyers calling for protests to gather which read: "The NYPD has a total financial allocation of $11bn per year. This money goes towards racist policing that destroys Black and brown communities while people who are struggling do not get the resources they need. CARE, not COPS, is the answer".
The MET Gala is an event held in Manhattan's Metropolitan Museum of Art to raise money for the Costume institute and features A-list celebrities donning the most outlandish costumes that benefit the year's theme. This year's theme centers around American fashion with the title In America: A Lexicon of Fashion and and is split into two sections- one, that took place on 13 September 2021, with the second part scheduled to take place on 2 May 2022.
The Twitterverse was abuzz with video footage of the arrests. One, depicting a protester being dragged by two police officers screaming "This is what they do, they don't care". Reports on the protest are few in comparison to stories covering details on the costumes.
