The assemblies are being initiated by local non-governmental, non-profit organization Ecocare Maldives advocating for sustainability and protection of the environment.
The organization noted in its Open call for specific locations, "The project aims to establish Citizens Climate Assemblies across the Maldives bringing together people from different backgrounds and islands to learn, discuss and make recommendations based on conclusions about what they think should happen on addressing the implications of Climate Change".
The concept of a Citizen Assembly or citizens' jury or panel is now fast gaining popularity in places like Los Angeles, California in the United States to Melbourne, Australia.

These events will see to it that ideas and experiences of citizens are shared in a group format, and will reach its conclusion before the end of this year.
As per the NGO, findings from these discussions will be used to put together the ultimate National Citizen's Manifesto on Environment and Climate Action.
