On 20 April 2021, the United States issued an advisory against travelling to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Maldives
While SriLanka and Bhutan have been put under Level 1 of travel advisory, Maldives surpassed this category and was put into a Level 4. Level 1 countries are the last level for recommended travel.
In a statement, the US State Department advised "Do not travel to the Maldives due to Covid-19. Exercise increased caution in the Maldives due to terrorism,”. All travel advisories issued against India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Maldives also cited similar use of words.
While the UK is looking to lift the ban on non-essential travel of its residents, it has issued a travel ban to Maldives, Nepal and Turley, effective 12 May 2021. The countries are in the government's "red list" and any travelers that were in the countries at least 10 days before entering the UK will be barred entry- with the exception of British and Irish Nationals, visa holders and permanent residents.
A country heavily dependent on tourism to prop up its economy, Maldives had been well on its way to reaching this year's 1.7 million tourist arrival goal when the most recent wave of Cvoid-19 gripped the nation.
